New York City’s iconic Plaza Hotel will close for at least four years, starting in January, to undergo repair of its landmark-protected facade, the hotel announced Wednesday. 

The historic property, which first opened in 1907, is part of Accor’s Fairmont Hotels & Resorts brand. Situated along Fifth Avenue at the southeast corner of Central Park, the property will see a restoration to its facade, though the full scope and complexity of the project is under review, per the release. 

The restoration of the hotel, which has long been regarded as an “enduring part of New York City’s architectural and cultural heritage” will require detailed planning and coordination with relevant stakeholders, per the release. The hotel will also adhere to applicable historic preservation requirements as the project advances. 

“The undertaking reflects the complexity of maintaining a property of such architectural and historical significance, with careful consideration given to preservation requirements and the building’s long-term care, as well as the safety of our guests, employees, and the wider community,” the release said. 

The hotel is set to close due in part to the “significant intrusion to operations” the restoration will create, per the release. Representatives for The Plaza Hotel declined to comment beyond the release. 

The New York Times reported Wednesday that the hotel’s event rooms and the Palm Court restaurant will also close in January, though it is unclear if residents of the property’s luxury condo units will be displaced during the restoration. 

Elsewhere in New York, the historic Row NYC reopened earlier this year following significant renovations, as did the Crowne Plaza Manhattan Times Square. Meanwhile, The Chambers Hotel New York in Midtown Manhattan reopened in June as a fully independent boutique hotel.
