Dive Brief:

  • Infrastructure giant Balfour Beatty has sold its stake in Gammon Construction, a Hong Kong-headquartered builder, in order to focus on its U.S. and U.K. endeavors, according to an Oct. 13 announcement.
  • London-based Balfour Beatty sold its 50% shareholding to a subsidiary of Jardine Matheson Holdings Limited, its joint venture partner in the operation of Gammon, per the announcement. The transaction, which makes Jardine Matheson the 100% owner of Gammon, was worth 250 million British pounds ($333 million), and will be paid in three tranches ending on Dec. 31, 2028.
  • “Balfour Beatty’s investment in Gammon has been highly successful, providing a steady dividend for many years,” Philip Hoare, Balfour Beatty’s CEO, said in the announcement. “However, in line with our profitable growth strategy, the Group is focused on the opportunities across our chosen US and UK geographies where we continue to see significant potential.”

Dive Insight:

Balfour Beatty and Jardine Matheson co-owned Gammon starting in 2004, per the announcement. Balfour Beatty’s 50% share of Gammon’s profit from operations was 36 million pounds for the full year 2025 and 11 million pounds for the first half of 2026.

Gammon’s performance was not a factor in the sale, Vivienne Bellwood-Dunn, head of media and public relations for Balfour Beatty, told Construction Dive via email. The move also means that Balfour Beatty will no longer have operations in Hong Kong, per Bellwood-Dunn.

”The sale reflects the natural conclusion of a successful 20-year partnership and is consistent with Balfour Beatty’s Evolve, Energise and Explore strategic framework, allowing the Group to focus further on its core US and UK geographies,” Bellwood-Dunn wrote.

Jardine Matheson is an investment conglomerate founded nearly 200 years ago, per its website, that focuses on businesses in the Asia Pacific region. The full acquisition of Gammon will help Jardine build up Jardine Engineering & Infrastructure, which consists of Jardine Engineering Corp. alongside two joint venture assets, Jardine Schindler and Hactl, into a new platform, the parent company announced Oct. 13.

“Jardines has been an investor in Gammon since 1969, and this acquisition signals our continued commitment to Gammon and Hong Kong as we increase our stake in a business we have been deeply involved with, and are proud to partner with for many years to come,” Lincoln Pan, Jardine Matheson CEO, said in the company’s announcement.

Over the past year, Balfour Beatty has demonstrated its commitment to the U.S. and U.K. markets. In the first half of 2026, the contractor’s U.S. arm reported a profit from operations of 22 million pounds, a reversal from H1 2025’s 11 million pound loss. In particular, Hoare was bullish on aviation projects and data center work in the U.S.

To that end, Balfour Beatty appointed Emma Loxton as chief strategy officer in September, in order to boost the firm’s presence in the U.S., U.K. and Asia.
