Who Owns Your Building’s Data? Why Data Sovereignty Matters More Than Ever

As AI becomes more important to building operations, control over operational data could determine how much freedom building owners have to choose the technologies they use next.

AI is forcing companies to take a harder look at their data, and how much control they actually have over it.AI

A recent IBM study of 1,000 senior executives found that 71% believe switching their primary AI vendor or model would be difficult. Another 68% said meeting data residency and sovereignty requirements across different geographies is challenging.IBM最近对1000名高管进行的一项研究发现,71%的高管认为更换其主要AI供应商或模型会很困难。

The study wasn’t about buildings. But the findings raise a question that building owners and operators should be asking now: As AI becomes more integrated into building operations, who controls the data it depends on?

Buildings generate an enormous amount of operational data. HVAC systems, meters, sensors, lighting, access control, and other equipment constantly produce information about how a building is performing.

For years, much of that data had a fairly specific job. A Building Management System (BMS) used it to monitor and control equipment. A facilities team might use it to troubleshoot a problem. An energy application could analyze it to identify potential savings.

AI changes that picture.AI

Building Data Is Becoming a Strategic Asset

The data generated by a building may ultimately be useful for much more than the system that originally collected it.

AI and advanced analytics can use operational data to identify equipment degradation, optimize energy use, anticipate maintenance needs and uncover patterns that aren’t obvious to an operator. And we’re still early. Applications that haven’t been developed yet may find entirely new uses for the historical data buildings are generating today.AI和高级分析可利用运营数据识别设备性能退化、优化能源使用、预判维护需求,并发现运营人员不易察觉的模式。

That makes a seemingly simple question much more important: Who controls the data?

It’s easy to assume that if you own the building and its equipment, you have unrestricted access to the data generated by those systems. In practice, it isn’t always that simple.

Data can become trapped in silos, tied to proprietary platforms. It can be stored in formats that aren’t easily portable. In some cases, meaningful access to that data may depend on continued use of a particular vendor’s software or services, creating the potential for vendor lock-in.

None of that may seem particularly limiting when the system is doing what you need it to do.

It becomes a much bigger issue when you want to do something different.

What Happens When You Want to Change Technology?

Vendor lock-in isn’t a new issue in building automation. AI makes it more consequential because of how quickly the technology is changing.

The AI platform that seems like the best fit today may not be the one you want three years from now. New models will emerge. Analytics will improve. Building owners may want different technologies for different applications rather than relying on a single platform to do everything.

But those choices depend on being able to get to the data.

If operational data is effectively locked inside one vendor’s ecosystem, adopting a new AI or analytics platform can become far more difficult than it needs to be.

That’s the practical side of data sovereignty. It’s not just about where the data physically resides. For a building owner, there is a more useful questions are: Can you retain meaningful control over it? Can you access it? Can you move it? Can you decide which applications are allowed to use it?

The International Energy Agency’s Energy in Buildings and Communities Programme has identified both data sovereignty and avoiding vendor lock-in as strategic considerations for building owners.

There’s a reason these issues are getting more attention. The technology choices being made now can either preserve future options or narrow them.

Why Open Architecture Matters

This doesn’t mean abandoning the BMS or replacing systems that are already doing their jobs.

In fact, the opposite can be true.

An open, vendor-neutral edge architecture can provide a layer between existing operational systems and the growing number of applications that want to use their data. Information from different systems and protocols can be collected, normalized, and made available to authorized applications without requiring every new application to integrate separately with every device.

The benefit is flexibility.

An owner might use one analytics platform today and another several years from now. A building could introduce AI for energy optimization without turning over its entire operational data strategy to that AI provider. New applications can be added as needs change and technology improves.

The BMS keeps doing what it does well. The data becomes available to do more.BMS

Keeping Tomorrow’s Options Open

Nobody knows exactly what the building AI market will look like five years from now. Given how quickly AI is advancing, trying to pick today’s technology based on what we think will dominate years from now probably isn’t the best strategy.

What building owners can do is make sure they don’t unnecessarily limit their choices.

That starts with data.

You don’t need to know today which AI tools you’ll want tomorrow. But you should know whether you’ll be able to give those tools access to the operational data they need.

The most important AI decision a building owner makes today may have less to do with choosing an AI platform and more to do with preserving the freedom to choose the next one.
